Ethereum Keeps Blockchain Lead as Developer Share Shifts
Ethereum maintains its dominance as the leading blockchain ecosystem by developer share across all major continents, with Solana closely following. However, the annual growth rate has slowed, and there's a shift in the top developer regions.
Ethereum's developer share remains unchallenged, with Asia leading the pack, followed by Europe and then North America. This is a change from previous years when North America held the top spot. Despite a marginal 7% drop in contributing developers year-on-year, the overall developer count has surged by 39% since Ethereum's launch in 2015, when it had 1,085 developers.
Established developers, those with two or more years of experience, now make up 70% of code commits. This figure has increased by 27% in 2024. Regionally, India welcomed the most new crypto developers last year, while Africa saw a 6% increase. Meanwhile, the USA, the top country with 19% of the developer share, has been experiencing an annual decline in developer count since 2015.
In 2024, 39,148 new developers were drawn to crypto, with Solana being the most attractive ecosystem. The total number of monthly active developers in the web3 ecosystem reached 23,613. While specific data on leading developer communities is unavailable, notable developments include ZChains' successful launch and advancements by vountain in tokenization and Render Network in GPU computing.
Ethereum's dominance continues, but Asia's rise and North America's decline in developer share signal shifting trends. Despite a slowdown in annual growth, the overall developer count remains robust. Established developers are increasingly driving innovation, and emerging regions like India and Africa are contributing significantly to the growth of the crypto ecosystem.
