Get ready for a major shakeup in cross-border money transfers as Vipps MobilePay, the brains behind Denmark's beloved MobilePay app, teams up with platforms across Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Poland. This game-changing collaboration aims to connect wallets across Europe, turning cross-border payments into a breeze.
The Scoop
According to Vipps MobilePay's official statement, MobilePay users in Denmark might be able to transfer funds to Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Poland by next summer. They've joined forces with other European money transfer platforms to facilitate interconnectivity across borders. This venture promises to enable MobilePay users to send money just as effortlessly to users of, say, Spain's Bizum or Polish Blik, as they do to other MobilePay users today.
The European project, with partners based in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Poland, and Denmark, has a potential reach of over 100 million users across the continent. Further expansion is possible, with more countries joining the network in the future.
Jeanette Hertzum, Denmark country manager at Vipps MobilePay, shared her excitement in the statement, saying: "With this partnership, we're ensuring that Vipps and MobilePay users can use their wallets in more and more countries, and for more and more purposes."
Closer to Home
MobilePay users in Denmark already enjoy hassle-free transfers to MobilePay or Vipps users in Norway, Sweden, and Finland; those platforms having been linked already. Although Finland uses MobilePay similar to Denmark, Norway and Sweden operate with Vipps. Together, these services boast a combined user base of around 12 million people across the four countries.
In addition to Spain, Italy, Portugal, Poland, and Denmark, Italian provider Bancomat, Portuguese MB Way, and Spanish Bizum have initiated cross-border payment features this year. Meanwhile, Polish Blik is set to join the network.
While initial test payments between the Nordic countries and the new partner countries are planned soon, fees for cross-border transactions remain uncertain. Although Vipps MobilePay currently charges a 4% fee for cross-border payments within the Nordic region, they haven't confirmed whether fees will apply to payments to the new countries or the nature of such fees if introduced.
So, buckle up! With this partnership in full swing, it looks like the world of digital payments is about to get a whole lot smaller.
