Europe witnesses the opening of Elcogen's large-scale Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) manufacturing facility, aimed at fulfilling the rising demand for clean energy.

Elcogen Opens New Manufacturing Facility in Tallinn, Boosting Clean Hydrogen Production

Elcogen, one of Europe's largest manufacturers of high-efficiency Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) and Electrolysis (SOEC) technology, has opened a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Tallinn, Estonia. The new facility significantly increases Elcogen's production capacity from 10 MW to 360 MW.

The launch event, held on Tuesday, September 16th, brought together more than 300 guests, including investors, technology partners, and collaborators from across Europe, Asia, and North America. Key attendees included representatives from Baker Hughes, HD Hyundai, SmartCap, LHV Bank, Tartu University, and Tallinn University of Technology.

The facility, named ELCO I, was built with approximately EUR 50 million in capital investment, delivered on time and on budget by construction partner Maru Ehitus AS. The financing for the project was provided by Elcogen’s stakeholders and supported by the European Innovation Fund. The European Innovation Fund has also committed an additional EUR 25 million to expand capacity under Elcogen's "ELCO I" initiative.

Elcogen's customers span diverse sectors and applications from Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems and off-grid EV charging to green hydrogen and Power-to-X solutions. The new facility will eventually support the creation of circa. 300 local jobs.

The event featured factory tours, speeches from Elcogen’s leadership, and discussions on the future of clean hydrogen, the scaling challenge in global markets, and the importance of deep-tech manufacturing in the energy transition. Chris Nash, Chair of Elcogen's Board of Directors, stated that the new facility sends a strong message that Elcogen is ready for large scale delivery.

The facility is powered by a 9 MW energy supply from the nearby Iru Waste-to-Energy Plant and incorporates sustainability measures to reduce emissions. The facility also supports international supply chains with advanced automation, R&D capabilities, and sustainable design features.

Elcogen is committed to partnering with global system integrators, strategic partners, and governments to build resilient, low-carbon energy systems of the future. The company plans to eventually license its technology and manufacturing blueprint to trusted partners for local manufacturing, ensuring consistent IP control and enabling resilient supply chains.

The facility is seen as a boost to clean technology production, particularly in the context of energy security, supply chain stability, and net-zero commitments. Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe, offered a video message of strong support for the launch.

With nearly 150 employees from over 20 nationalities, Elcogen's workforce reflects the global nature of its mission. The company looks forward to contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future through its innovative hydrogen technology.
