Europe's digital powerhouse potential for Romania, asserted MEP during the Romanian Digital Day gathering
Romania Embraces "Digital Tiger" Moniker as IT Sector Thrives
Romania's strong IT sector has earned it the title of "digital tiger of Europe" by Victor Negrescu, a Romanian member of the European Parliament (MEP) from the S&D group. This assertion was made during the Romanian Digital Day event, which Negrescu organized within the European Parliament, with the aim of showcasing the potential of Romania's digital sector at the European level.
According to Negrescu, the IT sector in Romania boasts over 200,000 professionals and has seen an annual growth of 15% in the startup ecosystem. Europe, he believes, can become a global leader in innovation and digital transformation, but this will necessitate a strategic partnership between the public, private, and non-governmental sectors.
Corina Vasile, Executive Director of the Employers' Association of the Software and Services Industry (ANIS), confirmed that the local IT&C industry generated €22 billion in 2023 and accounted for 14.16% of the country's GDP.
now in its third edition, Romanian Digital Day brings together European and Romanian officials, business representatives, university leaders, and NGO representatives to discuss innovation, digital transformation, and strategies to strengthen Romania's presence in this field.
The growth trajectory of the IT sector in Romania, driven by factors such as a skilled workforce, competitive costs, and favorable business conditions, positions the country as a potential leader in digital innovation within Europe. The sector is expected to continue growing over the next five years, making it an attractive destination for foreign investment.
While the IT sector poses challenges such as competition and regulatory changes, the government and entities like ANIS play a crucial role in supporting the sector's growth through policy initiatives and advocacy. Romania's ability to capitalize on its strong IT sector will be key to its overall economic growth and development.
- As Romania's IT sector continues to flourish, representing over 14.16% of the country's GDP and generating €22 billion in 2023, the country is poised to become a leader in digital innovation within Europe, attracting foreign investment in technology and business.
- For Romania to establish itself as a global leader in innovation and digital transformation, a strategic partnership between the public, private, and non-governmental sectors will be essential, as suggested by Victor Negrescu, where technology can support the growth of the business sector, creating new opportunities and bolstering the nation's overall economy.
