Expanding Fiber Network by Liquid in Botswana is Positive News for Zimbabwe, Explained Here

In a significant development, Liquid Intelligent Technologies has completed a 730-kilometer fibre network extension in Botswana, connecting Ramatlabama to Ramokgwebana. This expansion, completed in December 2024, helps bridge Botswana internally and enhances links to neighbouring countries like Zimbabwe, thus improving cross-border digital connectivity.

The extended network provides several benefits for both countries. For Botswana, it strengthens regional digital infrastructure, fostering collaboration and trade within Africa. The network expansion contributes to Botswana's digital transformation and employment opportunities.

For Zimbabwe, the expansion significantly enhances connectivity, resilience, and regional integration. By connecting Botswana and Zimbabwe more closely through fibre optic networks, this infrastructure contributes to regional integration by enabling smoother flow of data, supporting trade, digital services, and cooperation between the two countries. It increases resilience by providing alternative routes and reducing dependence on limited connections.

The expansion also strengthens Botswana's economic hubs and integrates with the One Africa Digital Network. Liquid Intelligent Technologies already controls over 82% of Zimbabwe’s equipped international internet bandwidth capacity as of late 2024. The expanded fibre network in Botswana further solidifies Liquid’s dominant position in the region, allowing Zimbabwe greater bandwidth access and diversity through these cross-border fiber routes.

The network provides multi-terabit capacity and cross-border digital infrastructure across Africa. This expansion is relevant to mobile operators in Zimbabwe like Econet, as they rely on fibre networks for mobile broadband delivery. The fibre network extension enhances high-speed connectivity for both urban and rural areas in Botswana, and supports local ISPs in Botswana, enabling them to reach more retail customers.

However, it's important to note that the fibre network expansion does not directly address the lack of fibre access in most of Zimbabwe. The expansion improves redundancy and connectivity for Zimbabwe, creating an additional route for data traffic.

In summary, the Botswana fibre network expansion by Liquid Intelligent Technologies not only boosts Botswana’s digital landscape but also enhances Zimbabwe’s connectivity and resilience with strengthened cross-border fibre infrastructure, facilitating deeper regional integration between the two nations. This development is a significant step towards a more interconnected Africa.
