In a pioneering series, "Naming the Dead" debuts on National Geographic on Aug. 2. This six-part investigative series, streaming on Disney+ and Hulu the day after its premiere, tracks the work of the DNA Doe Project, a nonprofit organization that harnesses genetic genealogy to crack cold cases.

The series unfolds like a high-stakes mystery, with each episode centering around a distinct case. One of the featured cases is "The Oil Well Murder," aired in August 2022, where Detective Bryan Johnson enlists the DNA Doe Project's aid to identify the victim.

Another case explored is "The Body in the Sand," a 32-year-old enigma of an unidentified young female found deceased in the desert. Local police collaborate with the DNA Doe Project to bring resolution to this case.

In another episode, the DNA Doe Project partners with police to uncover the identity of a Texas murder victim who has remained a mystery for 38 years. The series also delves into the case of a victim of serial killer Larry Eyler, where coroner Scott McCord seeks the DNA Doe Project's assistance.

A man's identity remains unknown after he was discovered crushed under ice in a railroad car. Journalist Maressa Burke works with the DNA Doe Project to locate his family, as chronicled in the episode "The Body on the Train."

With over 50,000 bodies still unidentified across the United States, the DNA Doe Project's work is vital in providing closure to families and solving enduring mysteries. "Naming the Dead" is a testament to the power of science and cooperation in solving cold cases and offering answers where once there were none.
