Skywalker Sound, a world-renowned sound design, editing, mixing, and audio post-production facility located in Nicasio, California, is set to reveal some of its secrets in an upcoming Today at Apple session.

Al Nelson, a supervising sound editor and sound designer at Skywalker Sound, is known for adding additional sounds to creatures, which he refers to as "creature sweeteners". Nelson seeks out unique sounds and enjoys breaking technology for unexpected results.

Ben Burtt, a legendary sound designer who started out with a Macintosh SE and continues to use Mac computers for sound editing, uses a performance approach for fantasy sounds, including alien voices and creature sounds. Burtt's work on the performance of R2-D2's sounds was refined in the prequels, as he served as both sound designer and picture editor.

Gary Rydstrom, a seven-time Oscar-winning sound designer who started working at Lucasfilm in 1983, emphasizes the importance of considering sound early in the filmmaking process. Rydstrom notes that telling a lot of the story with sound can be less expensive than visuals and sometimes more emotionally powerful.

At Skywalker Sound, Pro Tools is the main audio application used, and they employ approximately 130 Mac Pro racks, 50 iMac, 50 MacBook Pro, and 50 Mac mini computers for their sound work. The Soundminer library system is used for descriptive keyword searches of their nearly million-strong sound library. Keyboard Maestro and Matchbox software are integral to Baihui Yang's process at Skywalker Sound.

In the upcoming event, Leff Lefferts, a sound designer, will share his favourite projects and demonstrate how to make vocal effects for a character using everyday objects and GarageBand on Mac. Unfortunately, detailed biographical information about Leff Lefferts is not readily available.

Participants can view footage from Skywalker Ranch in Apple's Behind the Mac film during the event. The Sound Ranch is a 153,000-square-foot facility owned by George Lucas, and a part of Skywalker Ranch.
