FDA Grants 'No Questions' Approval to Believer Meats for Cultivated Meat Production, Completes North Carolina Facility Construction
Believer Meats Secures FDA Green Light for US Market Access
Believer Meats, a leading player in the cultivated meat industry, has achieved a significant milestone by securing a 'no questions' letter from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This letter confirms the safety of Believer Meats' products for the US market, making it the fifth startup in the US to receive this regulatory approval.
The Israeli-American company, formerly known as Future Meat Technologies, has also completed the construction of a large-scale production facility in North Carolina. This facility, claimed to be the world's first and only large-scale cultivated meat production site, is a testament to Believer Meats' commitment to advancing the cultivated meat industry.
However, the FDA's 'no questions' letter and accompanying scientific memo have not yet been posted on their website. Believer Meats' CEO, Gustavo Burger, revealed this development, emphasizing it as a "defining" and "bold leap forward" in commercializing cultivated meat to build a more sustainable food system.
Despite not yet releasing an official public statement, the FDA clearance and the operational capacity of the North Carolina facility position Believer Meats to move forward with product commercialization in the US market. Companies like Good Meat (Eat Just), UPSIDE Foods, Mission Barns, and Wildtype have already secured the FDA green light, and while no specific market launch date or additional regulatory approvals (such as USDA clearance) have been reported yet, the FDA letter generally enables legal marketing of cultivated meat products in the US.
Believer Meats operates in Israel, Chicago, North Carolina, and Dubai. The company uses Non-GMO technology for its cultivated meat production and is one of the top-funded players in the cultivated meat space, having raised $347m in its series B round in 2021.
Other startups, such as Mission Barns, are also making strides in the industry. They have announced plans for Q3 launches, while Meatable aims to start construction of a pilot-scale cultivated meat facility in Singapore later this year.
As the cultivated meat sector continues to grow, it's clear that Believer Meats is well-positioned to make a significant impact. However, the company still needs to secure a grant of inspection from the USDA and label approval to access the US market.
