Federal Funding Allotted for Advanced TV Alert Systems at Public Media Outlets via NextGen TV Technology

In a bid to enhance emergency communication and promote energy efficiency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced that several organizations and programs will continue to receive funding for the implementation of Next Generation Warning System (NGWS) programs and energy efficiency initiatives in 2023 and 2024.

The funding, provided by FEMA, will support various programs including the Energy Consulting for Residential and Non-Residential Buildings (EBW and EBN), the Heat Pump Support Program (BAW), and funding for efficient heat networks (BEW). The application portals for these programs have been reopened, and the funding conditions have been updated as of early 2024.

The NGWS concept is being developed to improve continuity and leverage new technologies, such as ATSC 3.0. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) has already awarded 30 grants through the first round of the NGWS grant program.

FEMA is committed to building resilience by rapidly disseminating emergency communications to the public through diverse integrated pathways. To this end, the agency's Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) provides a suite of tools and resources for local authorities to effectively send emergency communications to the public.

Public media stations play a vital role in emergency alerting in communities across the country. Recognizing this, the NGWS grant program prioritizes public stations and provides funding for media organizations to upgrade their equipment and for training. This enables the use of NextGen TV broadcast technology and comparable digital broadcast technology for radio stations.

In the latest round of funding, stations in Alabama, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, Tennessee, and Virginia are the recipients of funds for public safety equipment upgrades.

By supporting these initiatives, FEMA is taking significant strides towards enhancing public safety, improving energy efficiency, and fostering resilience in communities across the United States.
