Ilika's PRIMED Project Aims to Revolutionise Solid State Battery Technology

In a significant move for the UK's battery innovation sector, Ilika, a leading solid state battery technology company, has embarked on the PRIMED project. This collaborative initiative, involving Ilika and its partners, is focused on the manufacturing and scale-up of Goliath A-Sample solid-state batteries (SSBs) for automotive applications.

The PRIMED project is designed to accelerate the production readiness of Goliath battery prototypes at a scale suitable for automotive industry adoption. By addressing challenges in manufacturability, safety, and high-performance metrics such as energy density and charging speed, the project aims to bring Ilika's Goliath solid-state battery technology to the forefront of the electric vehicle market.

Ilika's Goliath platform is a large-format solid-state battery designed to meet automotive requirements, offering high energy density and rapid charging capabilities. The PRIMED project underpins the manufacturing process scale-up, leveraging Ilika’s patented stacked solid-state battery design targeted at scalability necessary for automotive mass production.

Goliath A-Sample batteries produced within the project are automotive-grade, having passed critical safety tests such as nail penetration trials, validating their robustness for vehicle integration. The project focuses on developing stacked battery designs protected by Ilika’s extensive patent portfolio (62 patents), which cover cathode deposition and scalable manufacturing methods, giving Ilika a competitive edge.

Manufacturing qualification is being advanced through partnerships with companies like Cirtec, facilitating the scale-up from development prototypes to production-suitable batteries. Initial prototypes, including a 50Ah battery developed in a related effort (HISTORY project), demonstrate the feasibility of rapid charging and high energy density required by electric vehicles.

The commercialization pathway involves securing licensing agreements with automotive manufacturers, expected to take 18–24 months, with production scaling planned towards the end of the 2020s. The PRIMED project supports Ilika’s broader commercialization strategy, allowing it to serve as a technology licensor and protect its intellectual property while enabling industry partners to manufacture Goliath batteries.

Ilika will receive £1.25 million in grant funding from the Demonstrate fund for a 12-month collaboration programme commencing on 1 August 2025. HSSMI, a UK-based manufacturing consultancy, will play a key role in the project by producing a Production Scale Model and Business Case Review to support the strategic industrialisation of Ilika's Goliath technology.

In PRIMED, Ilika will build and test its P2 SSB cells and take them through an industrialisation process to deliver a 50Ah A-Sample. The manufacturing of Ilika's first batch of Goliath A-Samples at the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC) marks a significant milestone towards giga-scale manufacture of solid state batteries in the UK and worldwide.

Solid-state batteries from the Goliath platform aim to address the electric vehicle industry challenges of achieving greater range, faster charging, and improved safety compared to conventional lithium-ion cells. The PRIMED project is central to bringing Ilika’s Goliath solid-state battery technology from prototype to scalable automotive manufacturing, positioning it to meet electric vehicle market demands for safer, higher performance batteries with industrial-scale manufacturability.
