Federal Information: President Donald J. Trump Defers Woke Artificial Intelligence in Government Institutions
In a significant move, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order in April 2025, aiming to ensure ideological neutrality in artificial intelligence (AI) models used by the Federal government. The order, known as the "Unbiased AI Principles," sets forth guidelines that AI systems must follow to prevent the promotion of partisan or ideological agendas.
The principles require AI models to be truth-seeking, ideologically neutral, and objective. This means that AI must provide accurate, historically correct, and scientifically sound responses, while acknowledging uncertainty when information is incomplete or contradictory. AI models must also remain neutral and nonpartisan, avoiding the incorporation of ideological concepts such as critical race theory, transgenderism, unconscious bias, intersectionality, and systemic racism.
To ensure compliance, the order directs federal agencies to procure only large language models (LLMs) that adhere to these principles. Developers are instructed not to intentionally encode partisan or ideological judgments into an LLM's outputs unless those judgments are prompted by or readily accessible to the end user.
The order also mandates the establishment of oversight mechanisms, including regular audits and compliance monitoring. AI vendors are required to be contractually accountable for adherence to these principles. The Director of the Office of Management and Budget is tasked with issuing guidance to implement these standards across federal procurement.
The Executive Order is part of a broader initiative by President Trump to reverse harmful AI policies and enhance America's global AI dominance. In January, he signed executive actions to end radical and wasteful diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and preferencing within the Federal government. In March, he issued a Memorandum to remove DEI from the Foreign Service.
Today, President Trump also signed Executive Orders on facilitating the buildout of data infrastructure and promoting the export of American AI technologies. In addition, an Executive Order in April ensured that school discipline policies are based on objective behavior, not DEI.
The move to enforce unbiased AI principles comes after instances where AI models changed the race or sex of historical figures due to prioritizing DEI requirements, or asserted that a user should not "misgender" another person even if necessary to stop a nuclear apocalypse. President Trump is advancing trustworthy AI in the Federal government to protect the integrity of information and services provided to the American people.
