Financial institution Ozon Bank unveils debut of credit card services

In the ever-evolving landscape of Russian banking, Ozon Bank has made a significant stride with the launch of its new credit card program. Recognized as one of the fastest-growing digital banks in Russia by Frank RG analytical agency in 2023, Ozon Bank is now setting new standards in the credit card sector.

The new offering from Ozon Bank stands out from traditional Russian banks due to its strong customer loyalty scheme. Cardholders can enjoy up to 25% cashback on selected categories or the option to purchase products on Ozon for just 1 ruble. The card is available both virtually and physically, and customers can link it to their existing Ozon card credit limit, offering a level of flexibility and integration that is modern and appealing.

Ozon Bank's expansion plans also include the installation of 350 ATM points across Russia by the end of 2025, aiming to provide broader accessibility for its services.

In contrast, traditional Russian banks have been reducing credit card limits and issuance, a move likely influenced by tightening financial regulations and ongoing geopolitical conditions. This reduction has created a less favorable environment for consumers seeking credit, a challenge that Ozon Bank's program appears to address proactively with its attractive loyalty options and easier access.

The trend of reducing credit card issuance and limits is also linked to the increase in credit card delinquency, a significant challenge for Russian banks. Delinquency rates have sharply increased, with nearly 70% over six months and 110 billion rubles by spring 2025, according to OKB.

Banks have had to close credit card contracts with long-unused limits due to the Central Bank's regulations, and it has become unprofitable for banks to maintain "dormant" clients who hold a credit card "in reserve".

Despite these challenges, Ozon Bank's entry into the credit card market with an appealing and customer-centric product marks a competitive and differentiated approach in 2025. The card offers a grace period of up to 78 days, a credit limit of up to 1 million rubles, and can be used for both online and offline purchases. Maintenance of the credit card is free, making it an attractive option for many consumers.

With over 31.7 million active clients, Ozon Bank is well-positioned to make a significant impact in the Russian banking sector. As the market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Ozon Bank's innovative approach shapes the future of credit card services in Russia.
