Financial institution Sparkasse implements modifications affecting numerous clientele.
In a recent development, Sparkasse customers can now collect Payback loyalty points using their regular Girocard. This new feature, the result of a cooperation with Payback, allows customers to earn points automatically when making purchases at participating retailers, without the need for additional cards or apps.
To activate this new function, customers need to link their Payback account to their Sparkasse Girocard. This can be done through the Sparkasse online banking portal or the Sparkasse app. The process is straightforward and takes only a few minutes.
Firstly, customers are required to join the S-Vorteilwelt, the savings banks’ value-added program, if they are not already members. Next, they link their Payback account to their Sparkasse Girocard. Once linked, points are collected automatically when paying with the Girocard at partner stores.
Customers can view their Payback points balance directly in their online banking and the S-Vorteilwelt app. The service started regionally on July 1, 2025, and will be extended to around 12,000 stores throughout Germany. It is important to note that participation is optional, and not all Sparkasse branches are participating in the change.
In addition, Sparkasse plans to offer Payback points for certain financial products, with each participating savings bank deciding their own rewards. Customers do not need to worry about their sensitive data, as Payback does not share IBAN or BIC during the linking process.
The new function is not automatically activated or available on every Girocard. Customers need to initiate the setup process themselves through online banking or the Sparkasse app. Upon selection, the user is automatically redirected to Payback to complete the linking process. Activation is a one-time process and does not need to be repeated before each purchase.
Larger Payback partners such as Aral, dm, and Edeka will follow in the fall. Customers who do not already have a Payback account can create one during the linking process. This new feature is just another way Sparkasse is making banking more rewarding for its customers.
Other Sparkasse customers can also collect Payback loyalty points for their business transactions, as the new cooperation extends the automatic points collection to certain financial products. Technology plays a crucial role in the linking process, as customers can easily connect their Payback account to their Sparkasse Girocard through the online banking portal or the Sparkasse app.
