Foreign vehicles' lawfulness verification guide for Belarus residents
Checking the Legality of Vehicle Imports from EAEU Countries in Belarus Now Easier than Ever
Buying a car from another country can be an exciting venture, but it's crucial to ensure that the vehicle has been legally imported. In Belarus, this process has become simpler, thanks to the introduction of the Electronic Vehicle Passport System (EVPS).
The EVPS is a digital platform that contains comprehensive vehicle information, including technical specifications, import history, registration, and disposal data. This system, implemented across EAEU member states such as Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Russia, verifies customs clearance and legal compliance of imported vehicles.
To check the legality of a vehicle imported from EAEU countries, you simply need to visit the EVPS website or related national platforms. Input the vehicle's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) or chassis/body number to access its electronic passport. The EVPS will then display the import status, registration history, and whether all necessary legal and customs procedures were followed.
However, if the EVPS data is incomplete, such as when customs clearance details are missing, you may need to contact the relevant Belarusian authorities. For customs data, you can reach out to the State Revenue Committee, while the Technical Regulation and Metrology Committee can provide safety compliance information.
This approach is officially supported and helps prevent buying vehicles with illegal or incomplete import status in Belarus and other EAEU countries. As of January 1, 2025, the EVPS will be a mandatory system for vehicle registration, ensuring that only legally imported cars can be registered.
No other Belarus-specific online platform for import legality checking by VIN was indicated, but the EVPS covers cross-border verification within the union effectively. This new online service helps to avoid risks when buying a car privately and ensures the legitimacy of the transaction when buying a car from another EAEU country in Belarus.
The update was announced on the official Telegram channel "Customs authorities of Belarus". A VIN code typically contains 17 characters, consisting of Latin letters (excluding I, O, Q) and Arabic numerals. The check can be done via a service on the website of the State Customs Committee.
With this new system in place, buying a car from another EAEU country in Belarus is now a more transparent and secure process. So, before you make your purchase, remember to check the vehicle's legality using the EVPS to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience.
