Fortnite Introduces Bug Battles - Helldivers Developers Notice a Samey Feel
In the world of gaming, the latest season of Fortnite, titled "Shock 'N Awesome!", has sparked a wave of excitement and speculation among fans due to its striking resemblance to the Helldivers franchise. However, it's important to clarify that there is no official crossover announced between the two games.
Fortnite's new season introduces bug-like enemies, large-scale battles, and chaotic teamwork, which have left many players drawing parallels to Helldivers. The terminiids from Helldivers, for instance, bear a strong resemblance to Fortnite's new foes. Yet, despite these visual and thematic similarities, neither Epic Games nor Arrowhead Game Studios, the developers of Helldivers, have confirmed or teased any crossover content.
Arrowhead's CEO, Shams Jorjani, and community manager have acknowledged Fortnite's inspiration from Helldivers but have dismissed any crossover rumors, emphasizing that the games remain distinct experiences. On the other hand, Helldivers 2 is officially doing a crossover event—but this is with Halo: ODST, not Fortnite. The Halo crossover event is set to launch around August 26, 2025.
Sony's strategy is shifting towards community engagement, as seen in the release of Fortnite on Xbox Series X|S. This marks the first time Sony has released and published a game directly on Xbox hardware. The game features co-op PvE, reinforcements like the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Halo's Red and Blue Spartans, and even the possibility of obtaining Halo skins in the Battle Pass.
While Fortnite's new season shows a clear inspired-by connection to Helldivers 2's theme and design, a direct crossover is not happening at this time. The only active major crossover currently announced for Helldivers 2 is with Halo: ODST.
