The Darth Vader Fiasco: Hate Speech in Fortnite, and Epic Games' Quick Fix
"Fortnite rectifies Darth Vader's AI-generated dialogue following the use of offensive slurs"
Things took a dark turn for Fortnite when a generative AI-powered Darth Vader, based on the iconic voice of James Earl Jones, started spewing hate speech and profanity in the game. Epic Games, Fortnite's developer, swiftly addressed the issue with a hotfix.
Entering the Fortnite scene on Friday as part of the Star Wars/Fortnite crossover event, "Fortnite: Galactic Battle," Darth Vader's dialogue was generated by New York-based voice AI company ElevenLabs. This AI character was capable of responding to players in real time, but it didn't take long before things went south.
Players started coaxing the AI villain into uttering racial and homophobic slurs, expletives, and other offensive content. Epic Games acted fast and posted on social media that a hotfix had been rolled out to put a stop to this unacceptable behavior.
"We pushed a hotfix immediately and this shouldn't happen again," the company said.
A follow-up email to Decrypt revealed an oversight in content moderation before Darth Vader's addition to Fortnite. Epic Games acknowledged that a specific variation of an expletive wasn't caught by their filters. The hotfix addressed this particular word specifically.
The AI-generated Darth Vader was crafted using archived recordings of James Earl Jones' voice, who had previously licensed his vocal likeness to Lucasfilm. Epic Games paid tribute to the late legend, stating, "Darth Vader wouldn't be nearly as sinister without James Earl Jones, who voiced Vader in the 'Star Wars' films. We're honored to feature the voice of the late Mr. Jones and we thank his estate for the opportunity."
Epic Games has been embracing generative AI since 2023, even as competitors have been wary of this emerging technology. However, this isn't the first time AI-generated content has sparked concerns in Fortnite. In January 2024, Epic rushed to remove racist AI-generated images from user-created islands following a backlash from players. Despite this, Epic maintains a light-handed approach in moderation, choosing to focus on ensuring compliance with community rules rather than over-censoring creator intent.
Epic Games deploys a multi-layered content moderation approach, consisting of safety filters, system instructions, and a final review. The company emphasizes the need for continuous improvement in AI moderation tools to prevent future incidents.
As AI technology advances, detecting AI-generated content becomes increasingly challenging, which could render regulation ineffective. Nevertheless, Epic Games focusses on ensuring all content complies with Fortnite's rules and guidelines, regardless of its origin.
