Fujifilm Breaks Tradition by Introducing a Fixed Lens for a GFX Camera Model for the First Time
Fujifilm's GFX100RF: A Compact Medium-Format Powerhouse
Fujifilm has unveiled the GFX100RF, a groundbreaking medium-format camera that combines exceptional image quality with portability and affordability. This innovative device, the first Japanese brand's medium-format digital camera with a fixed lens, is set to challenge the market with its unique features.
At its heart lies a 102-megapixel CMOS II sensor, measuring approximately 43.8 x 32.9 mm, delivering images with rich tonal range and over 14 stops of dynamic range. The sensor supports 16-bit RAW files, encouraging digital zooming and cropping without sacrificing detail.
The camera's key optical feature is a fixed 35mm f/4 lens, noted for its sharpness across the entire frame. With an internal 10-element, two aspherical element design, the lens allows detailed close-ups with a minimum focusing distance of 20 cm. Despite the aperture being limited to f/4, the lens performs well in low-light, producing smooth, film-like grain at boosted ISO levels.
Autofocus capabilities are sophisticated, with Intelligent Hybrid AF combining TTL contrast AF and phase detection autofocus. The AF works well in various modes, including single point, zone, wide/tracking, and face/eye detection, covering subject detection types such as animals, vehicles, and aircraft.
The GFX100RF emphasizes in-camera processing and JPEG/HEIF output, offering extensive film simulations, multiple crop modes, and aspect ratios. RAW shooting is fully supported for those preferring post-processing.
Additional features include an electronic viewfinder (EVF) with an eye sensor, prolonging battery life by activating the EVF only when the camera is raised to the face. The camera also boasts twin memory card slots, a relatively compact and lightweight body, fast mechanical shutter continuous shooting, and a hi-res 5.76-million dot electric viewfinder.
The GFX100RF is priced at $4,900 and will be available in April. Despite its affordable price, it remains less expensive than the Leica Q3. The camera's specifications can be found on Fujifilm's website.
In summary, the GFX100RF stands out as a unique fixed-lens medium format camera that balances exceptional sensor performance, a highly capable pancake-style 35mm f/4 lens, and advanced in-camera JPEG processing features in a compact package. This device is designed to appeal to both enthusiasts focused on high-quality out-of-camera images and professionals who demand the ultimate RAW resolution.
