Funding for the Innovation Valley Garzweiler Project
In the heart of Germany, the Innovation Valley Garzweiler project is underway, marking a significant step towards the transformation and sustainable redevelopment of the Garzweiler open-pit lignite coal mining area. This multi-year regional initiative, spanning until August 2026, is focused on the coal phase-out and the transition towards renewable energy and low-carbon economic activities.
The project, centred in the city of Neuss, is spearheaded by the Landfolge Garzweiler association, with Dr. Gregor Bonin, 1st deputy mayor of the city of Mönchengladbach, serving as its chairman, and Volker Mielchen as the managing director. The association covers approximately 430 square kilometers and plays a crucial role in land management, redevelopment, and stakeholder coordination during the transition process.
The Landfolge association is supported by a range of partners, including economic development agencies from Rhein-Kreis Neuss, Heinsberg, Mönchengladbach, Zenit GmbH, and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The state is contributing around 180,000 euros to the project, with the Rhein-Kreis Neuss focusing on building an innovation ecosystem within the project.
The Innovation Valley Garzweiler aims to attract new companies or branches of existing ones to the region, fostering economic growth and development. The project received a funding decision of 3.8 million euros, which will be distributed across various aspects of the initiative.
