Global company, 500, debuts MENA investment fund for nurturing growth-stage startups in the region.
500 Global Launches $500 Million Fund for MENA Tech Startups
A new fund, 500 MENA, has been launched by global venture capital firm 500 Global, with a focus on investing in growth-stage technology startups across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The fund, valued at $500 million, will issue $10 million checks to these startups, which operate in sectors such as SaaS, AI, and fintech.
The 500 MENA fund is led by Amjad Ahmad, who brings over 20 years of experience in emerging markets. Ahmad has previously led venture and growth investments exceeding $1 billion in the region. He will be joined on the investment committee by Courtney Powell, 500 Global's chief operating officer and managing partner.
The fund aims to address critical gaps in funding at the pre-seed and seed stages, supporting emerging tech entrepreneurs in the region. It operates with a strategy emphasizing localized infrastructure and ecosystem development to solve regional challenges while scaling solutions globally.
This initiative aligns with 500 Global’s mission to fuel next-generation tech champions in emerging economies. The fund builds on 500 Global’s broader investment thesis, which includes backing companies that positively impact sustainability goals, and mobilizing capital aligned with mission-driven and sustainable innovation across emerging markets, including MENA.
Key aspects of the 500 MENA fund's investment strategy include targeting innovative early-stage startups in MENA that have potential for significant regional and global impact. The fund also leverages 500 Global’s global network to provide mentorship, capital, and ecosystem support tailored to local market needs.
Moreover, the fund incorporates sustainability and scalable economic transformation goals, inspired by partnerships such as with the UN SDG architect Dr. Alaa Murabit, to foster sustainable growth in the MENA tech ecosystem.
Ahmad sits on the board of regional startups like Eyewa, Homzmart, and The Luxury Closet. He stated that the fund aims to fuel the next wave of tech champions in the MENA region, driving innovation and economic growth.
The fund is backed by prominent Saudi institutional investors including Jada Fund of Funds, Saudi Venture Capital (SVC), and Sanabil Investments. This investment underscores the growing interest in the MENA tech ecosystem and the potential for these startups to make a significant impact on the global stage.
