Global Conference to Take Place in Cancun on March 21, 2021, with Focus on Rebuilding the Travel and Tourism Sector Worldwide

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has announced that the 2021 WTTC Global Summit will be held in Cancun, Mexico, from 23-25 March. The event, which was originally scheduled for Spring 2020 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be a hybrid event, combining physical and virtual participation.

The summit will be held at The Moon Palace Convention Centre in Cancun. Physical attendance will be limited and outdoor sessions will ensure physical distancing. To ensure a safe large-scale event, enhanced safety and hygiene protocols such as mask wearing, physical distancing, hygiene and sanitisation, fast turnaround testing will be implemented.

Carlos Joaquin Gonzalez, Governor of Quintana Roo, emphasised the importance of these measures. He stated that the Global Summit will comply with the world's best available health and hygiene protocols. The Cancun Airport operates more than 300 daily flights, and the R rate remains below one.

WTTC President & CEO, Gloria Guevara, also emphasised the importance of ensuring the 20th WTTC Global Summit adheres to these protocols. She stated that WTTC has been at the forefront of international efforts to save the Travel & Tourism sector, which has been severely impacted by COVID-19.

WTTC aims to use the Global Summit to learn from the challenges of the pandemic and showcase how to adapt to COVID-19 to lead the Travel & Tourism sector back to recovery. The Palace Resorts Group holds the WTTC Safe Travels stamp, further ensuring the safety of attendees.

Virtual participation will be available with up to 20,000 free registrations. The summit will also feature high-profile international speakers, as previous Global Summits have attracted former US Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, former UK Prime Minister David Cameron, former President of Argentina, Mauricio Macri, and former President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso.

WTTC will announce its major new initiatives for 2021 during the Summit. The organisation has recently offered to work closely with the new incoming US administration to recover international travel. WTTC's five-point list of top priorities for recovering international travel includes reopening borders, adopting a global standard testing regime, committing to seamless travel, reopening essential 'air corridors', and re-establishing relations with countries around the world.

Research from the 2019 WTTC Economic Impact Report shows that Travel & Tourism was responsible for one in 10 jobs (330 million in total), making a 10.3% contribution to global GDP and generating one in four of all new jobs. The WTTC Global Summit 2021 promises to be a significant event in the recovery of the Travel & Tourism sector.
