TURKEY'S ASELSAN ON NATO'S LIST OF AIR DEFENSE GURUS
Global defense conglomerate Aselsan joins other prominent players in a NATO-led air defense initiative.
Ankara's top dog in defense electronics, Aselsan, has made the elite cut alongside global titans like Airbus Defence and Space, Lockheed Martin UK, Raytheon, and Thales LAS. NATO has tapped Aselsan for its Ground-Based Air Defense (GBAD) project, a move that solidifies Turkey's standing in NATO's defense landscape.
In the GBAD project, Aselsan will join forces with industry heavyweights, delving into the concept phase of the system's architecture development. By mid-September, deliverables from this initial stage will be evaluated, with the most promising designs moving forward.
Turkey's domestically developed Hisar air defense system is already operational, while other NATO members rely on alternatives such as the Patriot system. However, the Turkish Defense Industry Presidency (SSB) oversees more than 1,100 procurement and R&D programs, with approximately 75 percent of its systems also deployed within NATO forces.
The SSB head, Haluk Goörgünen, views Aselsan's inclusion as a testament to Turkey's engineering prowess, technological depth, and strategic dependability. This project validation reveals the global capabilities of both Aselsan and Turkey's defense sector as a whole.
Aselsan's selection stemmed from the layered air defense architecture of the Turkish Armed Forces, which includes the Hakim 100 air command and control system. This integrated network, known as the Steel Dome architecture, showcased Aselsan's expertise in air defense systems, preparing the ground for the company's role in shaping NATO's future airspace defense.

Under the agreement with the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA), Aselsan will work alongside its counterparts in designing modular, scalable, and interoperable GBAD system architectures. This project aims to enhance operational effectiveness, cost-efficiency, and interoperability among NATO allies and partners by developing very short to medium-range capabilities to counter a variety of air and missile threats.
The GBAD project, part of NATO's 27 multinational efforts, is currently in its concept stage. Successful contractors will move to subsequent phases focused on modularity and new technologies following the mid-September 2025 evaluation.
Aselsan's involvement in the GBAD project underscores the growing importance of modular, scalable, and interoperable defense systems. This initiative accelerates the modernization and technological advancement of Turkey's defense industrial base, positioning it as a key player within NATO's defense ecosystem.
