Google Drive undergoes a redesign following Material 3 guidelines, bringing a more expressive look to the platform

Google Drive for Android is undergoing a significant makeover, with version 2.25.310.0 rollout introducing the Material 3 Expressive redesign. This update brings several key changes to the popular file-sharing app.

Redesigned Search App Bar

The search app bar in the redesign is thicker than before and features a centered “Search in Drive” hint after the “Google Drive” wordmark animates out. Notably, the hamburger menu and profile picture are now placed outside the search field.

Continuous File List or Grid View

A notable feature in the redesign is the entire list or grid view of files being placed in one large continuous container, which is slightly darker than the background. This design differs from other apps that use individual boxes for each line.

Connected Button Group for View Switching

In the redesign, Google Drive uses a connected button group to switch between list and grid view within the Files tab. The top tab indicator is smaller in the redesign, and there is no change to the height of the bottom bar.

Other Notable Changes

The 'Suggested files' widget in Google Drive is also receiving an M3 Expressive redesign. The large container for the file list or grid view is a departure from other apps like Contacts or Phone, which use individual boxes for each line.

Gradual Rollout

Not all users are seeing the entire redesign yet, with some only seeing one or two new components. This gradual rollout allows Google to gather feedback and make any necessary tweaks before the redesign is fully implemented.

Google Drive for desktop is also receiving a redesign, with a centralized interface added. The new search app bar component and the connected button group for switching views are expected to be part of this desktop redesign as well.

With these changes, Google Drive for Android is embracing the Material 3 Expressive design principles, offering smoother visuals and stronger accents to enhance the user experience.
