Google's AI Coding Assistant Jules Gets Major Update with CLI and Public API
Google's AI coding assistant, Jules, has received a significant update. The tool now integrates directly into developers' daily workflows via a command-line interface (CLI) and a public API. This allows developers to interact with Jules directly in their terminal, reducing context switching.
The CLI, dubbed Jules Tools, offers integration options and more plugins are expected in the future. Recent upgrades to Jules include memory to store preferences, a stacked layout for diff viewer, image upload support, and the ability to read and respond to pull request comments.
By making the API public, Google aims to make Jules feel like part of the developer's toolkit. This allows integration into IDEs like VSCode and automation of routine coding tasks. Jules is designed for focused, 'scoped' tasks and creates a plan, executes independently, and pauses only if it hits a roadblock. Google has built in checkpoints to ensure Jules doesn't just guess when it gets stuck; it pauses and asks the user for guidance.
Unlike Google's other AI coding helper, Gemini CLI, which is more collaborative and involves step-by-step interaction with the user, Jules is designed for professional software engineers. It offers pricing tiers including a free plan and paid options for expanded task capacity.
The public API and CLI for Jules aim to streamline developers' workflows by integrating the AI coding assistant directly into their tools. With recent upgrades and planned plugins, Jules continues to evolve as a valuable tool for professional software engineers.
