Government Chooses 8 Companies, Including Tech Mahindra, Fractal Analytics, BharatGen, and Avataar AI, to Construct Large Language Models (LLMs) as Part of the IndiaAI Mission
The Indian tech sector is seeing significant advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) development, with several key announcements made by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology.
In a recent update, Vaishnaw shared that the models selected earlier for development under the India AI Mission are progressing 'really well'. He also announced that TCS has won a 5-year deal with Vodafone Idea to transform their business systems using AI.
Under the India AI Mission, eight new players have been selected to develop a Large Language Model (LLM). These companies include Tech Mahindra, Fractal Analytics, BharatGen (an IIT-Bombay Consortium), Avataar AI, Shodh AI, Zeinteiq Aitech Innovations, Genloop Intelligence Pvt Ltd, and NeuroDX (Intellihealth).
The proposed LLM by IIT-Bombay is expected to have one-trillion parameters, a significant leap in AI capabilities. The Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) will manage the funding of ₹988.6 crore for this project.
The government has partnered with cloud and data service providers to ensure access to graphic processing units (GPUs) for these AI models. This collaboration is crucial for the efficient running of these complex models.
Vaishnaw also mentioned the AI Impact Summit 2026, which is scheduled to be held in February. The Minister expressed his intention to invite countries that did not participate in earlier summits, such as Google, to this event.
The IndiaAI Mission's ₹10,300-crore outlay includes plans for sovereign AI capabilities, including sovereign large language models (LLMs), GPUs, skilling initiatives, and sector-specific AI use cases.
In addition, the Ministry of Electronics and IT will release an AI governance framework by September 28, outlining safety boundaries and checks and balances. This framework is expected to provide guidelines for the ethical and responsible use of AI technologies.
Meanwhile, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, which bans all forms of online money games, will be implemented from October 1. This move aims to regulate the online gaming industry and protect consumers from potential harm.
Lastly, before these recent announcements, in April, four start-ups were selected to focus on a specific type of AI models, including Sarvam AI. The 'Silicon Beach' vision is gaining momentum as the tech ecosystem grows in coastal Karnataka. These developments underscore India's commitment to becoming a global leader in AI technology.
