Hacked database of a hackers' forum appears on the Dark Web
In a disturbing turn of events, a popular hacker forum called OGUsers has been breached, with approximately 200,000 user records being dumped on the Dark Web.
Launched in April 2017, OGUsers is a market for buying and selling "OG" (original gangster) usernames, which are often considered desirable due to their shortness, such as @t or @ty. The forum has been known to trade in hijacked social media accounts, as well as in PlayStation Network, Steam, Domino's Pizza, and other online accounts.
The attack on OGUsers was first noticed by the 'Naked Security' team from cybersecurity firm Sophos. According to data breach monitoring service Under the Breach, the first attack was discovered in 2023, and it was carried out by uploading a shell to the avatar uploading feature.
The passwords of the OGUsers' users were not encrypted, making the stolen data particularly vulnerable. As a result, over half of the passwords had already been converted to plaintext as of the time Under the Breach posted.
The person who carried out the attack on the OGUsers forum has not been publicly identified. However, the attacker is known for dealing with stolen Instagram, Twitter, and other accounts.
This is not the first time OGUsers has been targeted. Last year, the forum announced an outage caused by a hard drive failure that erased months' worth of private forum posts and prestige points. In this recent attack, it appears that the rival forum was responsible for dumping the OGUsers' database.
Cybercriminals have been quick to exploit the breach, with the stolen data now circulating on the Dark Web. Users are urged to change their passwords immediately and to be vigilant for any suspicious activity on their accounts.
As the investigation into the attack continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of secure passwords and the potential dangers posed by unsecured online platforms.
