Hamburg Airport Pioneers Sustainable Aviation with Hydrogen Baggage Tugger

Hamburg Airport is pioneering sustainable aviation with the first real-world test of a hydrogen-powered baggage tugger. The vehicle, part of the EU's BSR HyAirport initiative, aims to decarbonize airport operations.

The converted Mulag 4CNG model, now running on hydrogen, was transformed by HTM Hydro Technology Motors from Bingen. It's the first time Hamburg Airport uses hydrogen instead of natural gas for a baggage tugger. The speed test, coordinated by Hamburg Airport as part of the EU-funded BSR HyAirport project, involves a mobile tank unit from Ryze Power for refueling.

The converted vehicle combines a hydrogen combustion engine with an electric drive system, developed by Linde Material Handling. Over six months, the speedtest will assess the economic feasibility of converting existing ground vehicles to hydrogen operation, providing insights for other European airports.

Hamburg Airport's hydrogen-powered baggage tugger test marks a significant step towards fossil-free ground handling. The results will inform decisions across Europe, driving the integration of sustainable solutions into airport processes.
