Hyundai persists in its wager on fuel cells: undeterred by challenges
Hyundai Unveils New Nexo Fuel Cell Vehicle with Enhanced Performance and Design
Hyundai Motor Company has announced the launch of the second-generation Hyundai Nexo, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle that promises improved efficiency, range, and performance. The new Nexo, larger and more powerful than its predecessor, is a testament to Hyundai's commitment to hydrogen technology as a key pillar of its long-term clean mobility vision.
The new Nexo boasts a battery capacity of 2.64 kWh and offers up to 700 kilometers of autonomy with a full charge. The fuel cell system now generates 110 kW, an increase from 95 kW. The engine power has also increased, going from 120 kW to 150 kW.
The design of the new Nexo is inspired by the Initium concept, featuring angular lines that give it a sleek and modern look. The tires have been designed to significantly reduce noise, ensuring a quiet and comfortable ride. The vehicle also features pixel-based optical groups to reinforce the brand image.
Hyundai's investment in hydrogen fuel cell technology is strategic and long-term. The company sees hydrogen as a crucial component of sustainable transportation, particularly in heavy and long-distance transport sectors where batteries face limits. The new Nexo exemplifies Hyundai’s leadership and confidence in hydrogen technology’s future role.
The Nexo has set new benchmarks in fuel cell efficiency, range, and features, winning awards and becoming the world’s best-selling hydrogen fuel cell passenger vehicle. Hyundai is also exploring high-performance hydrogen vehicles like the N Vision 74 concept, showing commitment to diverse hydrogen applications beyond passenger cars.
Hyundai is actively participating in major international energy forums, showcasing hydrogen vehicles and demonstrating the viability and readiness of hydrogen technologies. The company believes that infrastructure will grow alongside demand, with hydrogen especially advantageous for commercial transport where electric alternatives struggle.
Hydrogen fuel cells produce zero tailpipe emissions (only water vapor), aligning with increasingly strict global carbon and emission regulations. Hyundai’s investment supports broader clean energy goals, anticipating hydrogen’s role as a complementary solution alongside battery electric vehicles.
The new Nexo is equipped with hydrogen tanks that can hold up to 6.69 kg of hydrogen, ensuring a long driving range. Despite current infrastructure challenges, Hyundai advances hydrogen innovation, infrastructure partnerships, and visibility in global clean energy discussions to accelerate adoption.
In August, Hyundai sold nearly 18,000 electric vehicles globally, with the share of electric vehicles in its total sales increasing month by month. The new Nexo is a significant step forward in Hyundai's electric vehicle strategy, demonstrating the company's commitment to sustainable transportation and clean energy.
