Hyundai & Toyota Lead U.S. Market in Green Cars, Tesla Tops EV List
In a significant shift towards sustainability, Hyundai Motor Group and Toyota Motor Corp. have emerged as leaders in the U.S. stock market today, producing 10 of the 12 most environmentally-friendly cars, according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy's (ACEEE) GreenerCars ratings for 2024.
Tesla, the pioneer in electric vehicles (EVs), topped the list, demonstrating the growing demand and production of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the USA. Notably, more than half of these 'greenest' vehicles come at an affordable price, with a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) below $35,000, making sustainable driving accessible to a wider range of consumers.
The 2024 ratings saw seven pure electric vehicles, two plug-in hybrids, and four conventional hybrids leading the pack. Peter Huether, a senior transportation research associate at ACEEE, stressed the importance of expanding affordable EV options to cater to drivers across different income levels. This dominance of EVs and hybrids in the ratings signals a clear trend towards cleaner vehicles in the American market, with no internal-combustion-engine cars making the list of the highest-scoring vehicles.
Hyundai and Toyota's leadership in producing eco-friendly cars, coupled with Tesla's dominance in the EV market, indicates a promising future for sustainable transportation in the U.S. The affordability of these green vehicles further encourages consumers to adopt more environmentally-friendly driving options.
