Sonos Shifts Production, Ends Collaboration with IKEA, and Focuses on Core Products

In a move aimed at streamlining operations and refocusing on its core strengths, Sonos has announced that it has moved the majority of its US-bound production out of China. This decision comes as part of a broader strategy to control costs and prioritize software stability.

The tech company has had a challenging year, with a May 2024 app update causing controversy by removing popular features and introducing bugs. As a result, the CEO of Sonos stepped down at the start of 2025 due to customer complaints about the app.

In a surprising turn of events, Sonos has also ended its collaboration with IKEA on audio products. The split was amicable and strategic, with IKEA choosing to focus on simpler, more affordable Bluetooth speakers integrated with Spotify, while Sonos refocuses on its higher-performance, premium-priced products.

Despite ending the collaboration, Sonos will continue to support Symfonisk products with software updates. Existing Symfonisk devices, such as bookshelves, lamps, and picture frames, will remain on sale while stocks last. The first-gen lamp and bookshelf speaker from the collaboration received four stars in reviews.

In a bid to win back customer trust, Sonos is focusing on its core audio products instead of the rumored streaming box, which is reportedly on hold for now. The company has not released any new details about the streaming box as of now.

On a positive note, Sonos reported a 3% year-on-year growth in revenue in its quarterly earning report this week. Additionally, the price of Sonos' five-star Era 100 speaker has been reduced from £249 to £199.

The move by Sonos could help protect it from the tariffs recently announced by US President Donald Trump. However, no new Sonos deals were mentioned in the latest announcement.

As Sonos continues to navigate the challenges of the tech industry, it remains committed to providing high-quality audio products that meet the needs of its customers.
