Important Alert: Upgrade essential for 1 billion Android users as per Google's declaration
In a move to enhance the security and efficiency of Android devices, Google has unveiled a new feature: the "System services" settings page. This dedicated dashboard allows users to manage and update the internal Google background services running on their device, ensuring that core Google services are always up-to-date.
The new feature is designed to maintain essential phone features, strengthen security, and support other app functionalities. It is rolling out to devices running Android 6 Marshmallow or later, starting in July 2025.
If the "System services" page is not immediately visible on your device, you can navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security > System services or update your Google Play system by going to Settings > Privacy & Security > System and updates and installing the latest update. After installing the update and restarting the device, the new System services option should appear. If it does not show up right away, it is expected to become available within a few days.
The central update dashboard will update the core system services underpinning Android, addressing the issue of sporadic updates that have been a common complaint among users. This dashboard will list all services/applications from Google that help keep a phone or tablet running, providing transparency and control over these background services.
Moreover, the dashboard aims to address the fact that an Android device is never truly up to date. It will ensure phones are current even if automatic Play Store updates are disabled, addressing the issue of some updates getting overlooked despite being crucial.
For a billion Android users, this change is critical in securing their phones and ensuring they have the latest updates. Google no longer provides monthly security updates for Android 12 or older versions, making the central update dashboard even more important.
As of the current install base, up to half of the devices are not yet running Android 13 or newer. However, Google's new dashboard is expected to make a significant impact on the security and efficiency of Android devices, regardless of the operating system version.
This update reflects Google's effort to centralize and improve the management of vital Android system services outside the traditional firmware update process. It is a step towards enhancing the user experience and maintaining the security of Android devices.
Technology advances with Google's introduction of a "System services" settings page on Android 6 Marshmallow or later, providing a central update dashboard for managing and upgrading internal Google background services, such as during an Android 16 upgrade or Android 17 leak. This dashboard is crucial for Samsung's Android 16 users with Samsung One UI 8, ensuring security against possible Android and Google attacks.
