In a significant development for the digital landscape of Saxony-Anhalt, Minister Lydia Huskens, the Minister for Digital and Infrastructure, has launched a statewide fiber-optic campaign. This initiative aims to improve internet connectivity across the region.
The campaign includes the entire city area, except for Hundisburg. Deutsche Telekom has already laid fiber-optic cables throughout the Hundisburg area, and is now actively seeking house connections. In Haldensleben, a one-year construction stop, due to the insolvency of the previously commissioned construction company, is about to end. A new contractor has been found for the construction project, with the company M-net engaging as the new contract partner for the fiber-optic expansion project. M-net will supply the entire city with fiber-optic connections, except in Hundisburg.
Mayor Bernhard Hieber, in a statement made on August 20, 2025, urged citizens to take advantage of the current opportunity to get a free home fiber-optic connection. He commented on the latest development regarding Haldensleben, expressing his optimism about the upcoming improvements in internet connectivity.
However, it's important to note that while many people claim to be satisfied with their current situation, Minister Huskens emphasized that this is not entirely true. The demand for fast and stable internet connections is expected to grow, and the reluctance of customers is now putting the expansion of fiber-optic connections at risk.
Interestingly, a hundred years ago, people debated whether every apartment should have its own WC or an electric connection, and the result is well known. Today, the debate seems to revolve around the importance of high-speed internet connections, and the UGG's fiber-optic campaign in Saxony-Anhalt is a testament to this.
Currently, 70% of households in Saxony-Anhalt have the potential for a fiber-optic home connection, but only 30% are currently using it. This gap highlights the need for increased awareness and encouragement for households to adopt these modern connections.
The significant investments of telecommunications companies, especially in rural areas, need to be recouped at some point, or the expansion will stall. The UGG plans to provide fiber-optic connections to the entire city area, except for Hundisburg, in an effort to ensure the sustainability of these investments.
In conclusion, the fiber-optic expansion in Haldensleben and Hundisburg represents a significant step forward in digital infrastructure development. Citizens are encouraged to seize this opportunity and upgrade their internet connections for a more connected and digital future.
