iOS Deepfake Tool Uncovered by iProov: Threat to Digital Identities

In the digital age, the threat of AI-supported identity fraud continues to loom large. According to a report by Depositphotos, this trend is expected to persist in 2025.

Recently, the Threat Intelligence team at iProov discovered an advanced tool for video injection attacks on iOS devices running iOS 15 or higher, with a jailbreak. This tool, originating from China, is a cause for concern, especially in a geopolitically sensitive context.

The video injection attack tool works by connecting an RPTM server to the compromised device, injecting sophisticated deepfakes into the video stream, and bypassing the physical camera. The manipulated video is recognised as a live feed by the app, allowing for deception in identity verification processes.

This method aims to preserve the authenticity of human interaction during attacks, making it more challenging for attackers to bypass multiple security measures at once. The approach used in the tool enables programmatically scalable attacks, posing a significant threat to digital identities.

Effective protection against such attacks requires multiple layers. Confirming the right person, ensuring a real person, real-time verification, and continuous monitoring are all crucial components in safeguarding digital identities.

Andrew Newell, Chief Scientific Officer at iProov, states that the discovery highlights the industrialization of attacks on digital identities. As we move forward, it is essential to stay vigilant and invest in robust security measures to protect our digital identities.
