iPhone release by Apple imminent, with Samsung preparing to unveil their latest foldable models

Apple's much-anticipated foldable smartphone, the iPhone Fold, has taken a significant step forward as it enters the prototyping stage. The device, which has been in development since June 2025, is currently undergoing the Prototype 1 (P1) phase, marking the first time a fully-functional device has been created.

The prototyping phase is expected to continue until the end of the year, after which the iPhone Fold will move on to the Engineering Verification Test (EVT) phase. This critical step is a significant milestone before mass production. If development proceeds smoothly, the iPhone Fold is potentially scheduled for launch in the fall of 2026, likely alongside the iPhone 18 series.

In contrast, Apple has paused development of a foldable iPad, citing manufacturing challenges, higher production costs, and modest consumer demand for larger foldable devices. This means the foldable iPad will not launch alongside the iPhone Fold, and its release is now uncertain and likely years away.

The iPhone Fold is rumoured to feature a 7.58-inch internal display and dual 48-megapixel cameras. It is also said to have a titanium body and is being designed to address common folding phone complaints, such as the visible crease in the display. However, the final specifications of the device are still uncertain.

Meanwhile, Samsung is expected to launch its new foldable phones at its next Galaxy Unpacked event, which is just days away. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, Flip 7, Flip 7 FE, and a possible tri-fold device are tipped to be revealed at the New York event.

Apple's entry into the foldable smartphone market comes after Samsung has already released several generations of foldable devices. Despite Samsung being on its seventh generation of a folding book-style phone, Apple has not launched a rival yet.

The timeline for the folding iPhone's launch suggests a possible launch in the second half of 2026. If everything stays on track, the device could proceed to the EVT stage next year, and if all goes well, the folding iPhone could be ready for release late next year.

However, the design of the folding iPhone is yet to be finalized, and Apple has not yet announced an official release date. The company is said to be planning to launch its foldable iPhone late next year, but this remains to be confirmed.

In summary, the iPhone Fold is currently in the prototyping stage, with the potential for a launch in the fall of 2026. The foldable iPad, on the other hand, has been put on hold due to manufacturing challenges and modest consumer demand. The timeline for the folding iPhone's launch suggests it could be ready for release late next year, but the final design and specifications are still uncertain.

The iPhone Fold, currently in its prototyping phase, is anticipated to feature smartphones, dual 48-megapixel cameras, and a titanium body. In contrast, the foldable iPad's development has been paused, with its release uncertain and likely years away.
