Isle of Man Ship Registry Leads Maritime Sustainability with UN SDGs and Decarbonization Initiatives
The Isle of Man Ship Registry (IoMSR) has taken significant steps towards sustainability, winning awards and joining key initiatives. It has adopted four United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and supports the Eyesea maritime pollution NGO. IoMSR has also become the first flag state to join MAMII and the 'Getting to Zero Coalition', demonstrating its commitment to decarbonization and net-zero emissions.
IoMSR's sustainability journey began with adopting four UN SDGs, fostering collaboration across the maritime ecosystem. This includes shipowners, technology developers, classification societies, and regulators. The registry's commitment has been recognised with the Safety4Sea 2023 Sustainability Award.
IoMSR's proactive approach to decarbonization includes joining MAMII, the first flag state to do so. MAMII aims to accelerate solutions for monitoring and reducing methane emissions to meet IMO's targets. IoMSR also became the first flag state to join the 'Getting to Zero Coalition', aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. By including flag states like IoMSR, innovation can be scaled to meet global regulatory and safety standards.
To encourage the use of green technology, IoMSR offers reduced registration fees for ships deploying such technology. The Clean Cargo Working Group, represented in the SafetyTech Accelerator Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative, supports these efforts.
IoMSR's leadership in sustainability has been acknowledged with awards and membership in key initiatives. By adopting UN SDGs, joining MAMII and the 'Getting to Zero Coalition', and offering incentives for green technology, IoMSR is driving the maritime industry towards a sustainable future.
