July saw Norway break yet another electric vehicle (EV) sales record, with the Tesla Model Y taking the lead.

Norway Sets Record for Electric Vehicle Adoption in July 2025

Norway's electric vehicle (EV) market has reached new heights, with battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) accounting for an impressive 97.2% of all new passenger car registrations in July 2025. This marks a significant increase from the 85% share during the same period in 2024.

The strong sales in July were influenced by an interest rate cut and lingering consumer demand from earlier orders. The month also saw the highest number of new vehicle registrations in a single month in Norway since 2021, with a total of 9,563 new vehicles registered, representing a 48% year-over-year increase.

When plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are included, electric mobility accounted for an even higher combined share of about 98.2%. This shows a continued shift towards nearly complete electrification of new car sales in Norway, consolidating one of the world's most advanced EV markets.

Tesla's Model Y remains the best-selling individual vehicle in Norway, with 715 units registered in July 2025. However, the company fell to fourth place among electric car brands, with only 123 other Tesla vehicles registered outside of the Model Y. European and Chinese EV brands have shown growing strength in the Norwegian market, with Volkswagen, Volvo, Skoda, and MG leading in July 2025. Volkswagen claimed the top spot among electric car brands, with 1,116 total registrations.

The Norwegian market has shown a continued shift towards electric vehicles, with EVs holding a dominant 94% share of all new car sales in the first seven months of 2025. The growing strength of these brands is evident in the top positions they hold in the market.

Øyvind Solberg Thorsen, director of the Norwegian Road Traffic Information Council (OFV), noted that many of the vehicles registered had been ordered months in advance. This suggests that the trend towards electric mobility in Norway is not just a fleeting fad, but a sustained shift in consumer preferences.

With the rapid adoption of electric vehicles, Norway continues to lead the way in the global transition to cleaner, more sustainable transportation.

Key Trends:

Electric mobility in Norway displayed a sustained growth, with battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) collectively accounting for nearly complete electrification of new car sales, as shown by the combined market share of about 98.2% in July 2025. The burgeoning strength of European and Chinese EV brands, such as Volkswagen, Volvo, Skoda, and MG, are playing a significant role in driving this shift towards cleaner, more sustainable transportation.

With technology advancing at a rapid pace and consumer preferences leaning towards eco-friendly options, it is predicted that the electric vehicle (EV) market in Norway will continue to break records, consolidating its status as one of the world's most advanced EV markets.
