Kamala Harris, while in school, excelled in playing the French horn and percussion, and has a notable affinity for the music of George Gershwin.
In an unexpected turn of events, US Vice President Kamala Harris paid a visit to Liberty County High School in Hinesville, Georgia, during a campaign tour. The visit, which took place during a high school band practice session on an otherwise average Wednesday in August, was marked by a display of the Vice President's deep-rooted passion for music.
Tim Walz, a former high school teacher and sports coach, welcomed Harris to the practice. As the band played, Walz instinctively started clapping along to the music, setting the tone for an impromptu music-themed conversation.
Harris, who grew up in a home filled with music, shared her love for various artists with the students. She described Kamala Harris as "a woman of many talents" and spoke about her admiration for funk-soul bassist Bootsy Collins, R&B artists Brandy and Monica, and rappers Snoop Dogg, Tupac, and Cardi B. Harris also revealed her personal favorite musician from her youth – the late Prince, whom she claimed to almost know every song by heart.
Harris' musical preferences, however, are not limited to contemporary artists. In May 2024, she revealed her favorite jazz albums, which included works from Charles Mingus, Roy Ayers, George Gershwin, Ella Fitzgerald, and Louis Armstrong. Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, and Beyoncé have also been featured on special playlists curated by Harris.
During the practice session, Harris highlighted two of her favorite albums – Roy Ayers' 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' and George Gershwin's selections from Porgy and Bess sung by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. The Vice President's Instagram post included a video of her discussing her love for these albums, titled "Mingus, Ayers, Fitzgerald and Armstrong - if you don't know, now you know!"
Harris also reminisced about her youth, revealing that she was in a band when she was the students' age. She added to Walz's words, telling students that practice makes for beautiful music, which is symbolic for everything they will do in their lives.
Despite a lack of available information about Harris' age when she played the French horn and other instruments, it is clear that her musical journey began at a young age. She has been known to play the French horn, percussion, xylophone, vibraphone, and kettle drums.
Harris' visit to Liberty County High School was a testament to her enduring love for music and her commitment to inspiring the next generation. Her passionate display of musical knowledge and her emphasis on the importance of practice served as a source of motivation for the students, making the otherwise ordinary Wednesday an unforgettable day for all involved.
