Kaspersky Use Persists Despite US Ban

Despite a September 2024 ban in the US due to supply chain risk and trust concerns, Kaspersky products continue to be used by a significant number of organizations. More than 40% of US companies that used Kaspersky before the ban announcement in June continue to do so. Even after the ban, hundreds of tech organizations and 19 government agencies were observed using Kaspersky products.

The US ban has had a global impact. Usage of Kaspersky products has dropped dramatically in countries without formal bans, from nearly 22,000 organizations in April 2024 to around 8,000 in November 2024. However, the effectiveness of the US ban has varied. While only 58% of US organizations appear to have eliminated their Kaspersky usage, countries like Germany, UK, and Italy, which did not institute outright bans, have observed faster removal of Kaspersky products.

Kaspersky customers in the US had their software replaced without warning with UltraAV, a new antivirus solution. The US is one of the only countries to ban Kaspersky usage in both public and private sectors. Nearly three months after the ban, active use of Kaspersky products remains prevalent within the US.

The US ban on Kaspersky has led to a significant decrease in global usage, but its effectiveness in the US remains unclear. While some organizations have switched to alternative solutions like UltraAV, many continue to use Kaspersky products. The long-term impact of the ban and the reasons behind the continued usage are yet to be fully understood.
