Large-scale job reductions of 15,000 positions as part of Microsoft's significant AI-driven restructuring strategy
Microsoft, the global tech giant, has undergone a significant restructuring in 2025, resulting in the layoff of over 15,000 employees, or about 7% of its workforce. This move was driven by a strategic decision to invest heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) and infrastructure development, amounting to over $80 billion.
The layoffs were staged throughout the year:
- In January, 1% of staff were let go during performance reviews.
- May saw around 6,000 roles being cut, mainly in product and engineering.
- June witnessed approximately 305 jobs, mostly at Redmond headquarters, being eliminated.
- July marked the largest wave of 9,000 roles cut (4% of the workforce), signifying a substantial pivot towards AI.
Smaller layoffs continued as recently as August, with an additional 40 jobs being cut in Washington state, bringing local totals since May to over 3,160.
The restructuring has primarily affected product and engineering teams, particularly in software development and related roles. Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella, noted that AI now contributes to generating 20% to 30% of Microsoft's code, signalling a shift towards automating tasks traditionally done by human engineers.
However, this restructuring raises several ethical considerations. While investing in AI boosts innovation and future competitiveness, displacing thousands of employees causes immediate social and economic hardship for affected individuals. Microsoft has stressed providing severance, career counseling, and outplacement services, with some laid-off employees transferring internally, reflecting efforts to mitigate harm.
CEO Nadella expressed sincere gratitude to departing employees, acknowledging the difficulty of such decisions despite strong company performance. He described the layoffs as "weighing heavily" on him. In an internal memo to employees, Nadella addressed the layoffs, emphasising Microsoft's focus on navigating this transition thoughtfully, maintaining trust among its remaining employees, and ensuring that its ambitious goals in AI and innovation are supported by a strong, motivated workforce.
The restructuring at Microsoft exemplifies a larger trend across the tech industry, where automation and AI integration are redefining job roles.
