LEGO Recreates 1989's Game Boy with Accurate Scale, Lenticular Screen for Authentic Gameplay Simulation
LEGO Announces Game Boy Set for October Release
LEGO has announced the release of a new set that will take fans of retro gaming and brick-building back to the 1980s. The LEGO Game Boy set, priced at $60, is a more affordable option compared to past retro gaming sets, making it an attractive choice for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The set, consisting of 421 pieces, is a brick-built replica of the original Nintendo Game Boy handheld system, with iconic details and interchangeable brick-built game cartridges. It stands at 5.5" x 3.5" x 1" in dimensions, offering a nearly 1:1 scale representation of the classic device.
Each cartridge in the set comes with a lenticular screen that displays animated scenes when viewed from different angles, adding a touch of nostalgia to the build. The set also includes two classic cartridges: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and Super Mario Land.
The LEGO Game Boy set is equipped with physical buttons that can be pressed and functional volume and contrast dials, allowing users to interact with the set as they would with the original device. Additionally, it features a Game Pak slot that accepts brick-built cartridges and a link cable port cover.
The set uses printed tiles instead of stickers for various labels and details, ensuring a clean and authentic look. It does not require actual power to make things animated, using lenticular screens instead.
The Game Boy, first released in 1989, was the device that popularized the portable gaming revolution. Despite not being the most technologically advanced handheld on the market at the time, it had superior battery life and build quality compared to competitors. Nintendo's Game Boy was engineered to withstand being stuffed into backpacks, dropped on playgrounds, and passed between siblings for hours.
Retro gamers have been clamoring for another LEGO take on a Nintendo console since the interactive Nintendo Entertainment System was released five years ago. Sega's Game Gear and Atari's Lynx had color and better graphics than the Game Boy, respectively, but they were not as durable.
The LEGO Game Boy set is available for pre-order starting July 24, 2025, and will be officially released for purchase on October 1, 2025. For official updates and more details, you can visit the LEGO product page at www.LEGO.com/product/game-boy-72046.
This LEGO Game Boy set, reminiscent of the 1980s, incorporates a touch of retro style with modern technology. With functional buttons, lenticular screens, and interchangeable brick-built gadgets that mimic cartridges, it offers a unique blend of classic motors and contemporary tech.
