Improving Mobile Coverage in Rhineland-Palatinate: Citizens Encouraged to Participate in Nationwide Measurement Week
Residents of Rhineland-Palatinate are invited to contribute to the first nationwide mobile network measurement week, organized by the Federal Network Agency. The initiative, named "Germany Checks Its Network," is set to run from May 23 to June 1, aiming to enhance mobile network coverage, particularly in rural areas. Participants can utilize a smartphone app to record the mobile network coverage in their vicinity, with the collected data helping to improve the quality of mobile network coverage and contributing to a dead zone map.
"These valuable data will provide a better representation of user experience with mobile networks than the officially reported numbers of telecommunications companies," explained Dörte Schall, Rhineland-Palatinate's Minister of Digitization (SPD). This grassroots measurement project offers an authentic view of mobile network coverage across the region.
In May last year, Rhineland-Palatinate conducted a similar mobile network measurement week, with over 2,800 participants providing almost 1.6 million valid measurement points. The results showed that, while 95% of the measurement points showed a supply of 4G or 5G mobile networks, only 3.2% displayed 2G coverage, and 1.7% revealed no network availability.
The data collected from this week-long measurement can aid in addressing gaps in coverage, particularly in areas where commercial rollout is unlikely. This effort is part of a broader mobile communications funding program aimed at closing these coverage gaps through targeted investments and accelerated infrastructure deployment, with the goal of ensuring seamless nationwide mobile connectivity by around 2026.
