Loxea Launches BYD Electric Vehicles in Nigeria, Fostering a Green Transportation Revolution in the Country
In a groundbreaking move, LOXEA Nigeria, a subsidiary of CFAO Mobility group, has introduced BYD electric vehicles to the Nigerian market. The launch event, held at the Alliance Francaise in Ikoyi, Lagos, marked a significant milestone in Nigeria's transition towards cleaner transportation.
BYD, one of the leading electric vehicle manufacturers globally, is now available in Nigeria, thanks to LOXEA. The new showroom in Ikoyi offers a modern space for customers to discover electric vehicles and the accompanying services. In addition, LOXEA is planning to open a new showroom in Victoria Island, Lagos, which will house Nigeria's first BYD charging station.
The BYD Atto 3 and BYD Dolphin models were presented at the launch event, signalling some of the earliest available options from BYD in Nigeria. These vehicles are part of a broader wave of foreign investment and new EV entrants into Nigeria’s evolving market.
However, the Nigerian EV market faces challenges such as unreliable electricity supply, limited charging infrastructure, and generally high costs of EVs. Despite BYD’s presence, the market remains nascent, with EV sales below 1% of total vehicle sales. The government is pursuing supportive policies and aims to increase local manufacturing to 30% of vehicles sold by 2033.
The event also featured a creative collaboration with Pith Africa, a contemporary art collective. Pith Africa designed a special cover for the BYD Atto 3 and launched a storytelling campaign titled "It All Starts with a Naija Dream." This collaboration underscores the vision of Mr. Hirschfeld, CEO of CFAO Mobility, who believes it's time to build a support system for sustainable mobility that encompasses individuals, businesses, transport networks, and public institutions in Africa.
LOXEA is known for its innovative mobility services across Africa and is now expanding its electric vehicle offerings to Nigerian customers. The company is providing electric vehicles, as well as the necessary infrastructure such as charging stations, maintenance and repair services, and the supply of authentic spare parts. To make electric vehicle ownership more accessible, LOXEA also intends to offer flexible home-charging solutions.
The shift towards cleaner transportation in Nigeria positions the country among the growing number of African nations adopting sustainable transport solutions. 234 Drive, a platform recognized for its innovative approach to car culture, presented the vehicles at the launch. Mr. Hirschfeld emphasized that BYD's innovation aligns with the needs of African cities, while Mr. Mehdi Slimani, Managing Director of LOXEA Nigeria, expressed excitement about the introduction of electric vehicles and the services.
Nigeria's move towards electric vehicles is part of a broader trend across Africa. The country is positioning itself among the growing number of African nations adopting sustainable transport solutions, signalling a promising future for cleaner, more efficient urban transportation in Africa.
