Lucid Motors' Stock Surges 11% as Air Sedan Owners Granted Tesla Supercharger Access

Lucid Air owners will be able to access Tesla's Supercharger network starting July 31, 2025, but the charging speed will be slower than the car's native fast charging capability.

The charging speed of the Lucid Air when using the Tesla Supercharger network is limited to 50kW, much lower than what the Lucid Air’s native CCS1 charger can achieve. This limitation means that while the Lucid Air can access Tesla's vast Supercharger network, it only charges at a maximum rate of about 50kW on Tesla V3 and above Superchargers, resulting in gaining roughly 200 miles of range per hour of charging—slower than the Air's native fast charging capability.

The slower charging speed is due to several factors. The adapter used to convert Tesla’s NACS (North American Charging Standard) interface to the Lucid Air’s CCS1 port restricts the power to 50kW. Additionally, the Lucid Air relies on an adapter workaround, unlike the newer Lucid Gravity that has a native NACS port allowing faster charging on Tesla Superchargers. Charging via Tesla Superchargers using the adapter also requires initiation through the Lucid app with payment stored in the Lucid Wallet, which differs from native Tesla user integration, suggesting a more limited charging protocol.

In contrast, Lucid Air’s native CCS1 charging capability supports significantly higher DC fast charging rates (well above 50kW), allowing quicker replenishment of its large battery pack under ideal CCS fast charging stations.

Despite this slower charging speed, Lucid's stock surged 11% on Tuesday, reaching $3.13 per share, following a major Uber partnership announcement that involves deploying 20,000 or more autonomous Lucid vehicles on Uber's platform over six years. The first launch of autonomous Lucid vehicles on Uber's platform is expected in a major US city next year.

However, Lucid's stock is still down 27.9% from its 52-week high of $4.26 reached in August 2024. The stock is up just 1.3% year-to-date despite recent gains. The company's stock has experienced 56 moves greater than 5% in share price over the past year, showing extreme volatility.

Other companies like Ford, GM, and Rivian have also joined Tesla's charging ecosystem in recent months, making it the de facto standard for electric vehicles in the US.
