Gamescom 2025 Kicks Off with a Bang
The gaming world is abuzz as the annual Gamescom event has officially begun on August 24, 2025. This year's edition promises to be the biggest yet, with over 1,500 exhibitors taking part, including heavyweights like CI Games, Keen Games, Bethesda, and Nintendo.
The event, held in Cologne, Germany, showcased numerous new game announcements, with major titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Resident Evil: Requiem, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, Ninja Gaiden 4, The Outer Worlds 2, Silent Hill, World of Warcraft: Midnight, Black Myth: Wukong, and Lords of the Fallen 2 taking centre stage.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 made a splash with its reveal, featuring a team of up to four players fighting against dark forces in an apocalyptic future. Meanwhile, Resident Evil: Requiem brought back the horror classic, this time focusing on a survival struggle against the undead.
For those craving a dose of nostalgia, Death by Scrolling, from Ron Gilbert, offered a retro-inspired gaming experience, making players feel like they're gaming 30 years ago. Another nostalgic favourite, Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, was showcased, with its trailer presenting comical Lego battles.
Nintendo also made a strong showing, with demos for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends Z-A for Switch and Switch 2 consoles. The Switch 2, a small-display device also known as a handheld, allows for a good gaming experience even without a large display.
Other notable reveals included Hollow Knight: Silksong, which received an official release date and a preview live stream after several years of development, hinting at a large map and new crafting mechanics. Playable demos from Xbox partners like Borderlands 4, PowerWash Simulator 2, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, and Super Meat Boy 3D were also available on the show floor.
Streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, Paramount+, and Amazon Prime are making a strong presence at the Gamescom, aiming to attract customers with their game offerings in addition to films and series. Amazon Prime, for instance, presented the second season of the post-apocalyptic action series "Fallout" at the opening show, with Ella Purnell and Aaron Moton, the main actors of "Fallout," joining them on stage.
As the Gamescom continues, industry professionals and fans can look forward to trying out the new games in the coming days. Geoff Keighley, the opening show host, promoted the dynamic and visually impressive state of the gaming industry, with Eefje Depoortere, known as Sjokz, expressing her enthusiasm about the event, stating "We're here to play - and it's just getting started."
With such a robust lineup of trailers, gameplay reveals, and announcements from major studios alongside some indie titles, Gamescom 2025 is shaping up to be an unforgettable event for gaming enthusiasts.
