Grab a front-row seat for the sustainability revolution! 🌱 Starting next week, the EU will mandate a new energy label for smartphones and tablets. This move is all about helping you choose devices that are not only energy-efficient but also durable and repairable. Here's the scoop.

From 20th June 2025, manufacturers will be required to slap a new energy label on their smartphones and tablets before selling them in the EU. This label will provide insights into the device's energy efficiency, battery life, and resistance to dust, water, and drops.

"We aim to empower EU consumers with the knowledge needed to make more informed and eco-conscious decisions," said the Brussels authority, beaming with enthusiasm. With this label, you'll finally be able to compare devices and make smarter purchases.

Hand-in-hand with the energy label, manufacturers will be subject to stricter eco-design requirements. The commission expects smartphones and tablets to become more resistant, have extended battery life, and receive software updates for a longer duration. Moreover, manufacturers should make it a breeze to procure key spare parts. These new regulations are all about conserving energy, resources, and reducing carbon emissions.

Now, let's dive into what the label will look like.- It will showcase an energy efficiency class rating, ranging from A to G.- It will provide details on energy efficiency, battery longevity, resistance to dust and water, and drop resistance.- A QR code will point you towards the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL), giving you access to even more product data.

Additionally, there will be a mandatory repairability score. This score will help you understand just how repair-friendly the device is, making it easier to choose something that'll last. Manufacturers will have to pay extra attention to reparability, upgradability, and battery life, aiming to extend the lifespan of devices and reduce the frequency of new purchases.

The new rules apply to smartphones, feature phones, cordless phones, and slate tablets (devices with screens between 7 to 17.4 inches without attached keyboards and running smartphone-like operating systems). However, foldable smartphones (phones with flexible screens) and smartphones designed for high-security communications are exempt from these regulations.

Greater transparency equals empowered consumers. These new regulations push manufacturers to create smartphones and tablets that are durable, repairable, and, above all, built to last! 💪💪💪

  1. In the realm of environmental-science and technology, the EU is implementing a community policy that will introduce a new era of energy labeling for smartphones and tablets, effective from June 20th, 2025.
  2. As part of this policy, manufacturers are expected to undergo stricter eco-design requirements, fostering the production of devices that are not only energy-efficient but also durable, repairable, and equipped with long-lasting batteries.
  3. Alongside the energy label, vocational training in environmental-science and technology fields might become increasingly important for electronics manufacturers, as they will need to prioritize repairability, upgradability, and extended lifespan in their designs.
