Metaplanet expands its Bitcoin portfolio by acquiring additional 518 Bitcoins, spending approximately $62 million in the process.
Metaplanet Aims to Climb Bitcoin Holdings Rankings
Metaplanet, a listed Japanese company, has been making waves in the Bitcoin sector with its aggressive acquisition strategy. After its latest purchase of 775 BTC for approximately $93 million in August 2025, Metaplanet now holds 18,888 BTC, worth about $2.17 billion at current prices.
Despite this significant growth, Metaplanet remains outside the top 5 global Bitcoin holders. Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), with its vast holdings of 629,376 BTC, currently holds the top spot [1][3][5].
However, Metaplanet has its sights set high. The company aims to increase its Bitcoin treasury to 30,000 BTC by the end of 2025 and potentially 210,000 BTC by 2027, targeting about 1% of total Bitcoin supply [4]. This ambitious goal could see Metaplanet approaching the level of top-tier holders in the future.
Metaplanet's approach to Bitcoin acquisition is innovative. The company finances its purchases through capital markets, issuing stocks and bonds. It has also implemented a unique performance indicator called the "BTC Yield" to track the performance of its strategy [6]. The BTC Yield, which measures the evolution of the ratio between total Bitcoin holdings and the number of shares outstanding, was 26.5% between July and August 2025.
Charles Ledoux, a Bitcoin and blockchain technology specialist, is a key figure in Metaplanet's operations. A graduate of the Crypto Academy and a miner of Bitcoin for over a year, Ledoux writes articles about crypto on the platform and has conducted numerous masterclasses and over 2000 articles to educate newcomers to the industry [7].
As of the end of the fiscal year 2024, Metaplanet had zero Bitcoins. But by the end of June 2025, its Bitcoin holdings were 12,345 units. The news article discusses the analysis and opportunities of this bull run in relation to Metaplanet's Bitcoin holdings [8].
By August 2025, Metaplanet's Bitcoin holdings increased to 18,113 units, with the $61.4 million purchase of 518 BTC on August 12, 2025, being a significant contributor to this growth [2]. The average cost per bitcoin in Metaplanet's August 2025 purchase was around $100,000.
Metaplanet's rapid acquisition strategy, innovative performance metrics, and dynamic approach to capital market financing have been reflected in its recent regulatory disclosures and financial presentations [9]. As Metaplanet continues to grow its Bitcoin holdings, it remains to be seen whether it will manage to break into the top 5 global Bitcoin holders.
