Crypto Meets Real Life: The MetaMask Metal Payment Card

Get ready to splash your crypto cash like a boss! Metamask, alongside Mastercard and Baanx, is cooking up a metallic masterpiece - a payment card that lets you spend your digital gold straight from your wallet without losing control.

Spilling the deets in their press release on April 28, CompoSecure, the guys behind the metallic magic, announced their partnership with Metamask, Mastercard, and Baanx to bring the MetaMask metal payment card to life. Mark your calendars for the second quarter of 2025, as the global rollout is right around the corner.

Ever been irked by the hassle of preloading or converting your crypto assets before making a purchase? Have no fear, the new MetaMask card's got your back! This baby allows you to pay directly from your self-custody MetaMask wallet at millions of merchants globally, giving you full control up till the point of sale thanks to a smart contract that zips your transaction on-chain, pronto, at checkout.

Powered by Mastercard's global payment network and Consensys' Linea blockchain, the MetaMask card aims to make crypto payments as smooth as a tap-to-pay. Transactions take only a couple of seconds, leaving long waits and pesky centralized exchanges behind.

MetaMask cut the ribbon on the card's design earlier this year at ETHDenver, seeing it as a significant stride towards making crypto convenient for everyday essentials like coffee, flights, or rent. Ale Machado, MetaMask's product manager, comments, "For far too long, crypto users have been sidelined in everyday finance. The MetaMask Card flips that script."

The crypto card market's a hot potato, and competition's heating up. Binance, Coinbase, and Crypto.com are already serving up cards with crypto rewards, but MetaMask has an edge by keeping assets in users' wallets till the moment of payment. CompoSecure, masters of metal cards and authentication tech, designed the card's security and physical features, while Baanx, who powers cards for Ledger and 1inch, helped slave over the payment system.
