Microsoft's AI chief reveals that Google almost developed ChatGPT, but faced opposition from skeptics, apprehension over disrupting search, and safety concerns, which ultimately halted the project.

In the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence (AI), we find ourselves at the dawn of a new era (July 15, 2025). This transformation is not just a whisper in the tech industry, but a loud and clear call to the future, echoing the groundbreaking work of visionaries like Mustafa Suleyman.

Suleyman, once an AI pioneer at Google, was instrumental in developing LaMDA, a conversational AI model. However, due to safety and search disruption concerns, LaMDA was not launched at Google. Undeterred, Suleyman channeled his passion and expertise into a new venture: Inflection AI.

Before the release of ChatGPT, Suleyman and his team at Inflection AI developed "Pi," a personal AI chatbot designed to be a friendly and emotionally intelligent conversational partner. Optimised for personality, EQ, kindness, and being a friendly companion, Pi spoke our language more naturally and exhibited human-like conversation capabilities.

In 2022, Suleyman left Google to co-found Inflection AI and raised an impressive $1.5B for the company. The AI cluster built by Inflection AI consists of a 22,000 H100 GPU cluster. In January 2023, Inflection AI launched Personal Intelligence, seven months before OpenAI launched ChatGPT.

Suleyman's determination to create a similar AI to LaMDA at Inflection AI was not without controversy. Some Google employees were brutal skeptics, while others felt it had great promise and would be the future of AI.

Today, AI-powered browsers from companies like Perplexity's Comet and OpenAI's soon-to-launch browsers are becoming a reality and gaining traction among users. This new era of AI is not just a possibility, but a reality that is shaping the way we interact with technology.

In a recent podcast appearance on the CatGPT podcast, Microsoft's AI CEO, Mustafa Suleyman, discussed various AI-related topics, shedding light on the future of this transformative technology. As we continue to navigate this new era, the story of Mustafa Suleyman and Personal Intelligence serves as a testament to the potential and promise of AI.
