In the world of watchmaking, the use of titanium has become increasingly popular due to its lightweight nature, corrosion resistance, and hypoallergenic properties. MING, a Swiss watch brand known for its minimalist design, has recently unveiled a new addition to its collection – the MING Ghost model, crafted entirely from grade 2 titanium.
Grade 2 titanium, commercially pure titanium, offers several advantages over other materials. It is more affordable and easier to work with compared to alloys like Grade 5, and it is lighter than stainless steel by about 40-45%, offering excellent comfort for everyday wear. The MING Ghost model, with its fully brushed grade 2 titanium package, is no exception.
However, grade 2 titanium does have its challenges. It cannot be polished to a high sheen, limiting aesthetic options and fine finishing. This is why the MING Ghost model showcases contrasting circular and radial brushing patterns on its dial, creating a dynamic play of light. The design features contrasting brush directions to create visual interest because it can't be polished.
The MING Ghost model's dial is made entirely from grade 2 titanium, a choice that presents unique difficulties during machining due to the material's ductility and low elastic modulus. Despite these challenges, the engineering team achieved a lightweight design without compromising structural integrity, thanks to the properties of grade 2 titanium and pressure-balanced domed sapphire crystals.
MING has also incorporated blue Super-LumiNova X1 on the hands and crystal of the MING Ghost model, creating a floating index effect at night. The model also boasts a water resistance of 100m, which is surprising for a dress watch.
The MING Ghost model, priced at CHF 3,500 (~$3,950), is available now from the brand's website. With a weight of approximately 35g (~1.23oz), it offers a lightweight yet robust option for those seeking a minimalist timepiece. The model is limited to 250 pieces and comes with a matching gray goat leather strap with a titanium tuck buckle.
In comparison to the MING Ghost model, the Omega Seamaster 007 Edition, recently reviewed, is also constructed from grade 2 titanium. However, the MING Ghost model's dial features a unique two-part construction with a flat central section and an angled outer section, creating an almost otherworldly glow due to its spectral name and light-dependent shape-shifting.
Ming Thein, the founder of MING, described the Ghost model as a physical manifestation of "ethereal light playing off a forest of architecturally finished metallic surfaces." This description encapsulates the essence of the MING Ghost model – a minimalist timepiece that combines functionality with aesthetics, all while showcasing the unique properties of grade 2 titanium.
