Mitsui DM Sugar to Launch Vegan Tuna in 2026, Undercutting Conventional Prices
Mitsui DM Sugar is set to introduce a vegan tuna product in 2026, aiming to cater to the growing demand for sustainable alternatives to bluefin tuna. The company plans to produce 10 tonnes annually from 2028, undercutting the price of conventional tuna.
Bluefin tuna's popularity has led to supply issues due to limited availability and strict quotas. Osakana Kakumei, a new vegan tuna brand, is replicating its texture and appearance using konjac, seaweed, and bamboo fibre. Each 100g serving contains 6g of fibre.
Japan's seafood production has decreased by 20% in the past decade, with fishers decreasing by 30%. Mitsui DM Sugar will leverage its large-scale supply chain to produce vegan tuna competitively, targeting consumers who cannot eat sashimi. The company plans to explore additional nutrients and plant-based seafood options. Competitors like Azuma Foods and NH Foods use konjac flour but charge more.
Mitsui DM Sugar's vegan tuna will cost ¥2,000 ($13.50) per kg, cheaper than conventional tuna. Despite a 64% drop in global investment in plant-based companies in 2022, the company remains committed to its 2026 launch, aiming to address rising costs and declining seafood production.
