MTN Nigeria Leases Spectrum from T-Mobile Limited in Push for Network Expansion and Digital Inclusion

In a significant move aimed at boosting network capacity and advancing digital inclusion across Nigeria, MTN Nigeria has entered into a lease agreement with T-Mobile Limited. This agreement, effective from 1 October 2025, is a key enabler of MTN's national roaming agreement with T-Mobile, enabling MTN to manage increased network traffic from T-Mobile's customer base on its infrastructure.

The lease agreement reaffirms MTN's commitment to delivering reliable, high-quality connectivity to its customers as part of its Ambition 2025 strategy. Under the agreement, MTN Nigeria will lease 5MHz FDD in the 900MHz band and 15MHz FDD in the 1800MHz band from T-Mobile Limited.

This lease of additional spectrum resources is a cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable way to enhance network capacity, according to MTN. The company has received approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to proceed with the lease.

The lease agreement between MTN Nigeria and T-Mobile Limited is for an initial period of three years. Notably, MTN Nigeria will not renew its existing lease agreement with Natcom Development and Investment Ltd (Ntel) when it expires on 29 November 2025.

Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, emphasizes a collaborative approach to drive innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth within Nigeria's telecom ecosystem. He said, "This agreement is part of a broader industry push towards collaboration and expanding broadband access."

T-Mobile Limited is the new name for the Nigerian telecommunications operator formerly known as 9mobile. The rebranding, which occurred in 2023 as part of a strategic turnaround to modernize the network and regain market share, was overseen by Lighthouse Telecoms.

The initiative highlights a broader industry push towards collaboration, spectrum sharing, and expanding broadband access. This push is crucial in a country like Nigeria, where digital inclusion is key to economic growth and social development.

MTN Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to continued investments in infrastructure and partnerships supporting the delivery of innovative, high-quality telecommunications services across Nigeria. The company's efforts underline its role as a leading player in the Nigerian telecommunications industry and its dedication to improving connectivity for its customers.
